System 6.0.1 help needed

I am having problems with System 6.0.1 on my II-GS. Last night,
I attempted to boot up and received the following message:
Unable to load START.GS.OS file  Error=$0027.
Previous to this, I was getting a beep 1/3 through the thermometer
but no icons appearing. Upon completion of filling the thermometer,
the system froze. 
When I tried to use the Installer the hard disk sector BOOT would
not show up as an option. In fact the Installer was unable to recognize
anything on the hard disk even though its light is flashing while attempting
to boot. 
I would like to re-install but do not know how to get the system to recognize
the hard drive.
