80-col cards are easy.  In DOS, type PR#3 and your display should turn 
into 80 columns.  If you have the card in the AUxillary slot, the aux 
slot replaces slot three, so PR#3 says "Start output to slot 3" instead 
of the normal video.

To go from 80 to 40, it's some control character and return, like control 
Q.  Control-reset will certainly revert to 40columns.
