The Apple III came after the II+ and before the IIe
It was a flop. Some engineering problems (connectors) and mostly
marketing mistakes lead to its demise. It was a very important
machine.
It had a 6502 as the CPU (for compatibility with Apple II software)
and I think they had a special memory scheme which provided at least
128K RAM (perhaps 256K) in early machines.
It's contributions were software drivers and the Sophisticated Operating
System (SOS). A version of SOS was developed for the Apple II and
became known as ProDOS.
