as dave said, the //e retrofit mother boards have/had both connectors.

} end...).  Question:  Do the newer ROM 01 motherboards have the holes
} driled, or do they just have the solder pads?

my second gs has only the 7-line connector. the 2x3 pads are there,
but they are NOT drilled. 

my 1st gs actually has both connectors. early in the machine's life,
ie during the 1st year of applecare, there was a, shall we say, 'event'
that resulted in the need for a replacement mother board. to my good
fortune, the replacement was originally intended a //e upgrade. i am
actually using the 2x3 connector with the mb in its tower case - it was
easier to find a connector amongst my assorted electrical junk.
