Are you sure you can mix and match drives between Apple IIs?  There's a big warning label on the 
back of my Disk III telling users *not* to do this.

As for the drive signal, the analog board of the internal drive has to do something to that extra 
port on the back if the .d2-.d4 port on the back is simply daisychained to the internal drive.  
How else would that port not work?  At least that's my theory (not all that educated of one, 
though).
