Apple-scanner connection

I'm about to start experimenting with computer control of my AR3000
radio scanner. It has a nice regular serial port, and will happily talk
with my //e through a serial card and Proterm.

Before I re-invent the wheel, has anyone else done something along the
same lines? I have played around with basic and a small ml routine, but
not much luck as the scanner sends stuff every 25 milliseconds, which
doesn't allow me to use INPUT via the serial card. The other thing I
thought of was to write a proterm macro(s) and let proterm handle the
comms.

Anyone know a good way of inputting data from the super serial card in
basic?
