I would recommend BeagleWrite as well.  I remember being in middle school
and boasting to all my friends how fast it was, especially with my 8 MHz
zip chip.  It's a very flexible program, lets you use pictures and fonts,
and that alone will make your documents more presentable.  Another system
to check (if you can still buy it) is GEOS 2.1, using GeoWrite 2.1 is a
pleasure.  If you're only going to write small letters, though, that don't
need fonts, Appleworks is good.  If you're looking for something free,
however, your best bet is probably AppleWriter, which is powerful, but in
some ways complicated.

If you have a GS, tell me and I'll try to recommend some good ones
(BeagleWrite GS (Multiscribe GS in disguise) and Appleworks GS are great
programs and worth every penny).
