If you're useing a standard modem cable made back when 2400 was the 
fastest, you need to go out and get a Mac HiSpeed modem cable.  You can 
get them through InTrec, but if you need it now, check out EggHead or 
your local Mac store.  EggHead was charging $6.95 a year ago when I got mine.

You should also make sure it's set to use full data correction.
