a thermistor is most easily available at Radio Shack... i don't have the
part number, but check their resistor section; they should have a few
kicking around. The I/O port your book speaks of is likely the
joystick/internal gameport... i've done it many times myself using METAL
and some code written for it to do just that... most of the METAL systems
used to do it as a kick.
hell, i even built an external box with 9-pin connector to hook up to the
joystick port so that it would allow three or more thermistors connected
at once...
