Re: Newbie

The question I have to ask is...

If Endless Mike holds the Apple ][ in such low esteem, why is he trolling
on comp.sys.apple2? Certainly the traffic on alt.pictures.erotica is more
to his liking (see below), and comp.sys.msdos.lemmings (or whatever) would
be more appropriate.

Um...I have a "stock" 3MHz IIgs. Okay, so it has added memory and a hard
drive...the one at work is still just stock. I can run a really nice word
processor (Apple Writer ][) on it that blows away everything short of Word
Perfect in the MS-DOS world...and it runs faster on my IIgs than PFS:First
Choice or Professional Write do on a comparable-vintage 80286 or 80386 PC
running at 8MHz or 12MHz. That's just for starters. You want to see a
helpless crippled I-can't-sell-it-for-a-buck crappy computer? Go to a
used computer shop and look at the 80286 and 80386 motherboards...same vintage
as the IIgs...sitting in the giveaway bin because even the old software
won't run right on them.

: Perfectly wonderful? Puh-leeze. It sucked 10 years ago, it sucks worse today.

Where were you 10 years ago? When the IIgs came out, the only machine on
the market that could even come close for graphic and sound capabilities
was the Amiga, which, admittedly, with its 68000 architecture, surpassed
the IIgs. We're talking about the heyday of CGA displays here, back when
PC-style computers still had real speakers built-in. But even at that, I
think programmers did more with clicking the A][ speaker (on a 1MHz CPU)
than I've ever heard on a "stock" PC.

[snipped some pointless sniping]

: computer-literate babes. Besides, you will go blind trying to look at nudie
: gifs in 100X50 grayscale, which for a GSuck is top of the line.

Actually it's 640x200x4 or 320x200x16 for stock, but the SecondSight board
apparently fixes that little problem. But the question is, what do you
want to do with a computer? Why do people buy $2000 multimedia PC's with
SVGA displays, 4X CD-ROM, gobs of memory, huge hard drives, stereo sound
cards, etc., and then use that machine to run Word Perfect from DOS? Now,
if your plan is to jump on the 'Net and look at nudie GIF's, then a
machine with higher-end graphics capabilities and better TCP/IP support is
in order. Sure, with SecondSight you can look at the pretty pictures, but
quite frankly, finding, downloading, and viewing can be a real hassle
compared to getting on a machine with a graphic Web browser. But that's
what Macincrashes are for.

But if what you really need is effective computing power, take a look at
your needs. Then look at the capabilities of your computer. You may well
discover that the IIgs is a perfectly good choice. Hey, it works for me!

: Friends don't let friends drive at 4mhz.

Okay, speak up...I know someone on this newsgroup has his IIgs running at
14MHz. And since my 3MHz machine can out-run a 12-MHz PC, that 14MHz IIgs
ought to be nearly keeping pace with an 80486 running at 66MHz...
