I'd start suspecting memory trashing here by one or another NDA,
CDA, Init, Finder Extension, or the like. Normally that error is
caused by damaged icon files, but if an action from a DA crashes your
computer, something is trashing the icons in memory. Yes, one solution
is to pull out icons until things work, I don't feel that that's
necessarily the best solution. If a particular section of memory is
getting trashed, merely removing the icon loaded to that part of memory
will solve a symptom (crashing) while leaving the cause still in.
What inits, das, Finder extensions, etc do you have installed? You
mentioned the Chicago font, which hints at Pointless. Do you have the
latest version of Pointless (2.0.2 or 2.0.3; can't remember)? There is
a Font Manager bug related to trashing memory that Pointless can
inadvertantly trigger if there are no bitmaps available for a font
size, and you pull up the 'Choose Font' dialog. [That's the dialog box
with a list of fonts, list of sizes, check boxes for styles, etc] The
solution to that is either the latest Pointless or my FixFontMgr601
init, available at ftp.ugcs.caltech.edu, pub/nathan/fixfont2.0.shk
