how to download pictures?

I have been trying to download .gif and .jpg files which are posted in
messages. No luck.
As long as these messages were binscii-wrapped, this was ok.
But otherwise, I couldnt decode .gif and .jpg messages because I got them
as text files and I need them as bin -files.
So, how can I change txt-files to bin-files before I decode them?
