I think you're right.  Most of the "leaders" of Apple Computer were not real big
on the Apple II.  Jobs realy thought that it was "old technology" after the Mac
was released.  The is a realy good book about Apple called West of Eden.  I
remember a whole section of the book that talks about how Jobs pampered the Mac
development team, and basically had the Apple II people moved into older 
buildings.  The Mac team had refigerators filled with juice, etc.  As far as he
was concerned, Apple should have dropped the II when the Mac 128k was released.
Sculley knew that the Apple II and it's users were the bread and butter of Apple
but he also made the choice to discontinue it (or at least he was in charge when
the II was completely dropped from the price lists.)  I may be wrong about that
Spindler may have taken over before the //e was officialy dropped, but we all
knew that was going to happen.  It still pisses me off that they discontinued
a machine that they could not keep stocked in stores, because it didn't sell
enough.  What kind of company kills development on a product, because it will
compete with another product.  It would have made since the one that was
discontinued was the inferior one, but we won't go into that.
