memory question

Here is a question to you GSOS experts:
I wish to know how much memory is in my desktop before I load a picture
to desktop. I have GSRAM 1.5 meg and RAMFactor 1 meg.
I understand that GSOS 601 with the A2RAM driver combines this to a
2.5meg desktop max.
If I want to read a SHR or .GIF file of say, 50k, I sometimes get an
error message like "not sufficient memory".
I like the AppleWorks fefature showing always homw much desktop memory
is available. I havent seen a similar "memory available" in GSOS601.
Any ideas?
