There are three main kinds of CD's you can access:
Music CD's-- you can play standard music CD's with (1) a Driver for your
CD-ROM drive in a SYSTEM/DRIVERS/MEDIA.CONTROL folder, (2) Sys 6.0.1
MediaControl in SYSTEM/CDEVS, and (3) Sys 6.0.1 MediaControl.DA in
SYSTEM/DESK.ACCS
Apple format CD's-- with the usual Sys 6.0.1 FST's installed (e.g.
HFS.FST, ...) you can access files on for-Apple CD's like Golden Orchard.
In fact, you can boot System 6.0.1 from the GO CD-ROM disc!
Disc Passage CD's-- with the HS.FST supplying iso-9660 compatibility and
Sequential System's DiscQuest software, you can access piles of
encyclopedia, hobby, etc. CD's marked with the Compact Disc Digital Data
symbol. Often these are labeled "for multimedia PC or Mac". (Basically,
DiscQuest takes the place of the Disc Passage program used by PC's and
Macs.) You can access text, pictures, and sounds from these CD's.

Speed makes a big difference. For $50 you are getting, mainly, the case
which holds the CD-ROM drive, a power supply, and a SCSI cable. The 1x
CD-ROM drive will 'get you started'; but, it is too slow to stay with for
very long.
