I thought I might take a crack at this.
Your big problem really is: How can I make sure my data is
safe and sound?
My answer is this: What you need is a way to read each file,
remove it from the hard drive onto another medium, erase the
disk drive so it is back to a pristine condition, and then
re-install the whole thing back onto the disk drive again.
This would allow you to know, without doubt, that your files
have all been installed correctly.
My second observation is: Take that old HFS.FST thing out of
there! If you _have_ to keep a copy of the old HFS.FST - then
put it into a subdirectory. Name it something like Unused.INITs.
Otherwise, as you pointed out - you have no earthly idea what
is going on and you could cause more problems than you already
have.
Back to the subject though. Do you have ORCA/C? If so, the
source code to zip and unzip is available from wuarchive.wustl.edu.
Get it. You can then compile it for your system and use it
to create zip files. Or use GSHK or even GNO's compress
routine. In any event - go buy one of those thirty packs of
3.5" diskettes and make a backup of your hard drive. Then,
as I've said, erase the hard drive and restore everything.
Yeah, I know - it's a pain. So go borrow a hard drive from
a friend and use it. Either way's ok. Just so long as you
do it.
And one last thing - according to Jawaid - the more time you
leave the old HFS.FST on there - the more it messes up.
Further, the new HFS.FST doesn't correct problems which the old
HFS.FST created. So it's important you do this back-up/restore
ASAP.
Good luck!
