Correct. The DS1216C SmartWatch will not work on an Apple II
motherboard, because it needs to go under a static RAM chip, and the
Apple II doesn't have any of them.

The DS1216E is designed to go under an appropriate sized ROM chip.

The two use different pins to address the hidden clock. If I remmeber
right, the RAM version uses chip select, read/write and one data bus
pin. The ROM version uses chip select, two address bus pins and one data
bus pin.

You might be able to use a DS1216C with some slot cards that have a
suitable RAM chip, but you'd have to modify the No Slot Clock driver to
access it in the correct memory area, which could be further complicated
by bank switching in the C800 space.
