There was an update to this game when Apple released the ROM 01 GS
because the new ROMs broke the copy protection.  I don't remember the
exact symptoms, but it sounds like you're having that kind of problem.

The solution?  Get a cracked version or contact Interplay and hope they
have an update for you.
