Actually, any magnetic media tends to go random over time. Tapes
are even worse, because they experience print-through, as well.
We have thousands of NASA data tapes from probe missions that no
one has ever looked at, and odds are that they are already
unrecoverable.
I recently went through my entire 5.25 collection, sorting,
culling, and collecting into SHK backups, and I found about a
half-dozen bad ones. I don't smoke, and all of my disks are
stored in sleeves in disk boxes.
