Smartport Woes!

Ok, here is my problem.

I am trying to access my SCSI tape drive. I ran Slotscan 1.62 and it picked
it up no problem (NCRH6201-STD1-10). First I tried using 'The Smartport
Commander' but the commands for character orientated devices are not yet
operational. So the next step was to write my own routines. Using the
Apple IIGS Firmware Reference manual (Chapter 7 - Smartport firmware) I
tried to create routines to access the SCSI tape device. I tried the STATUS
call which worked. The CONTROL, OPEN, CLOSE, READ & WRITE calls all failed.

Has anybody succesfully written code that controls a SCSI tape device?
Does the Apple SCSI card support character devices?

I am using an Enhanced //e, with the standard Apple SCSI card. Any help
would be greatly appriciated.

Greg.
