IIGS and Fonts

I just had an odd occurance with the IIGS and HYperStudio and would appreciate
any clarification:

I have a lab with several IIGS (most of which are ROM 1) and have the kids 
do a little HYperStudio. In this case it was several kids from French class. 
To help them out I experimented with the Shaston font and determined which
Option + keys gave them needed accent marks (for example, Option+e e gives
e with an accent). Okay, time for class and out of five students two machines
would not do the accents (for example, Option+e e gave ee). I thought maybe
the keyboard since I seldom use the option key, but switching did nothing so
I decided that perhaps the fonts on the system disk were wacky.

Well, later that day I made some new copies and tried again. No problem. Then
I tried the machines that the kids with problems had used. It seems to be the
machines! Why? I looked in the control panel and couldn't see problems. Is it
in ROM? Whatever, any answers or solutions would be appreciated!!
