Letsee things a 486/66 does normally, uhhh, nothing... Last I checked most
486/66 boards come with a lot of slots, but no video or audio hardware. A
decent SVGA card <cuz VGA is just too lame for a real PC user> will cost
upwards of $100 plus ram, unless your one of those people who gets generic
crap.

: spending $40 on a washed up shareware game "just cause it could be done". Why

Most of the PC stuff I see for "next to nothing" is worth about "next to
nothing". It is true that software is more abundant for the PC than the
GS, but the price you will pay is in hardware not software. To get a decent
PC system you will need the following:

DX4/100 <cuz Mechwarrior on anything less than a DX4/100 is pathetic,
mostly due to a crufty 3d engine, and you can forget about
playing it in any SVGA mode unless you have a pentium>

Sound Card <you will need 16 bit sound, 8-bit sound has been deemed
lame by the PC community, funny tho how they still use the
same dorky $5 mic to record 16-bit noise as opposed to 8-bit>

Video Card <a true color video card of course, with a couple megs of ram
on it because screen refreshes suck without it>

Hard Drive <better pick up a couple gigs, the PC world dosen't seem
able to make games/apps that take less than 20 megs of
              space each>

Monitor <oh joy, better get that .28 pitch NI 1280x1024 capable,
17" to 20" behemoth, we wouldn't want our games to look
              fuzzy now would we>

Oh btw - all these better be on a PCI bus system or else you risk being
obsolete in the next 20 days. Funny how the $500 DX2/66 system is now
a $4000 game machine, gee could've went out and gotten a Sega Saturn
or Playstation for $300...

: someday no one will care that it can display jpegs or play Wolf 3D, because
: there is a limit on how much people will spend on "dead" computers. I own

Hmm, how much will we spend on dead computers, let me ask you, how much
do you expect to spend on your PC box? I hope you realize that it is
already probably "dead" hardware, if your running a pentium you can
consider your self current, anything else is obviously obsolete. <You
can check the system requirements on the oustide of the software packages
to judge exactly how obsolete you system is at any given time>

In the long run I expect that you will spend a lot more on your PC box
then I will spend on my GS, so who do you really think is spending more
on a dead computer.

: both types of machines and do not feel it is a personal or spiritual conflict
: of interest...and enjoy them both equally (some of the old Apple games are
: STILL more fun than the new PC games, I play Lode Runner as much as I do Dark
: Forces). There is enough room in the den for everybody. :)

I know all of the above for a fact because I also have both types of
computers, the difference is that I don't play the "update the hardware
game" with either of my systems. If my hardware dosen't cut it for the
latest game requirements thats just too bad, if I need to play games that
badly, I'll buy a system thats designed to play games, instead of a PC
that tries to be what it isnt.
