I ran into the same symptoms and fixed it by NOT setting COM1 or COM2 to
anything in the PC control panel.  I then configured the printer in
Windows to print to LPT1 instead of a COM port.

I was running the original Apple 486 card in a Q610 and was using Windows,
and I though realize that your hardware/software setup is somewhat
different, maybe some similar adjustments will work for you.
