I like the idea...

Is modern OS UI programming so difficult that an applesoft config menu
would be faster/easier?  I guess it would make it work on all
platforms so you wouldn't have to code different ui interface for
each.

Right.  I like the idea, too.

It means that anyone familiar with an Apple II can easily use
the configuration program, since it's just another Apple II program!

For increased eye sweetness, use hires.  ;-)
