The fact that the hard drive is now running smoothly may be deceptive - it has
already indicated to you that there is a problem, and the problem has now been
put off. I would say that the likeliest time for it to bite you is just before
your next backup . . .  ;-)

To prevent this, back it up _NOW_. Get a new hard drive, forthwith, and throw
that one as far as you can, in whatever direction will cause the best display
of strewn parts and broken crockery. Conversely, sell it to a hapless stranger
whom you will never see again, but this is ethically suspect, and inadvisable
in terms of personal safety as well.

You might look into the Focus hard-drive-on-a-card, interface card and drive
all in one. AllTech sells 'em, I believe, and they are cheap and fast. Good
