Probably a Performa 5200CD. I like the $1899 pricetag, and this is for
the family, not a high-powered graphics business. I know it's slower
because it does not have the L2 cache (or something like that), but once
we add on the A/V card so my son can edit videotapes, RAM, printer, etc,
we're looking at $3000, about the top of my price range.
: We just got a PowerPC 7200 at work. BAD NEWS!!! Avoid this model,
: although the 6100 series or 7100 series will probably work.
: 1) PowerPC 7200 will not run _any_ current version of Appleshare server
: software, v4.x and under.
Thanks for the warning. If not the 5200CD, I would next get the 6200 or
6300 Performas, although I don't like the built in speakers on the sides
of the monitor instead of the front.
: 2) PowerPC 7200 will not run a modem and Appletalk simultaneously. Appletalk
: must be disabled to use the geoport modem adapter. (Evidently the 7200 and
: the 9500 both share this little boo-boo). Apple has promised a future
: software upgrade to fix this problem, but that does us no good at the
: present.
: 3) A PowerPC 7200 locks up - a lot! We haven't found a MacSE applic yet
: that will run without bombing the PowerPC 7200. So much for Mac emulation.
: Just a few observations based on 3 days of unproductive usage. Your mileage
: hopefully will be better :)
Thanks for all the information!! I would really like a PCI PowerMac, but
they have had a whole butt-load of problems (been reading the Mac
groups). My guess is that Apple will come out with a PCI Performa in the
next year or so, but I don't know if I want to wait, and I'm not sure I could
afford it.
