Older Mac External HDs: IIC use?

A colleague has an external hard drive on his OLD Mac 512: known as the 
"Fat Mac."  I note that these hard drives are very cheap on the Mac for 
sale network.

The old Mac 512 has no SCSI port --- I think it reads through the drive 
port.

I suppose that this is a dumb question but....

Could that Mac external hard drive work from a IIC?  Maybe the ROMs
are incompatible, but has anyone tried it?   I know that hard drives for 
the IIc are scarce...   If this option works, it would be a great 
opportiunity for IIc users.
