RE: PC program to read 2e disks?
On Mon, Nov. 27, 1995, Markdm said this:
MA friend wants to convert a bunch of writing she did in Years Past on
Man Apple 2e. She used Apple Works and Apple Writer.
MAny suggestions for a PC program or a service bureau that can convert
Mthese into some usable PC format? Right now she's using Word Perfect
M5.0.
WordPerfect for the Apple IIgs contains a separate utility program
specifically for converting AppleWriter, AppleWorks, and other Apple II word
processor files into WordPerfect IIgs format. If you can borrow a copy and
use it, the files can then be transferred from ProDOS to MS-DOS via an Applied
Engineering PC Transporter's utility for crossing the barrier, or between the
two machines via a nul modem cable, or by uploading the files to a cooperative
BBS from the Apple, then downloading them with the PC.
As WordPerfect files maintain their file structure across platforms, the
files can then be imported into WordPerfect for DOS 5.0; please note, however
that WordPerfect/DOS will think the files are WordPerfect/DOS v.4.2 files, so
you will have to set your WordPerfect import filter accordingly.
Another method would be to buy a copy of CrossWorks, which directly
converts AppleWriter and AppleWorks files into WordPerfect/DOS files while
transferring them between the two machines. The box includes both ProDOS and
MS-DOS conversion software, and a null modem cable with all three kinds of
Apple plugs at one end and both kinds of PC plugs at the other for connecting
the two machines. Simple and elegant, really, and preferable to the method I
mentioned above, which only happens to be the one I use because I have both
WordPerfect for the IIgs and a PC Transporter.
Good luck.
