Apple IIe disk drive problem

       After posting a message requesting information about upgrading my
Apple IIe, I am now having problems with it. It seems that my IIe does
not recognize the disk controller I have in slot 6. When I turn the computer
on, the disk drive "whirs" briefly and the computer goes straight to basic.
Thinking that the card might be bad, I installed the card in my old Apple
II+, using the same disk drive, and the program loaded with no problem
whatsoever. Apparently, the problem lies with the IIe itself, since the
controller card should be compatible with both computers, yet it only
works in one.
        Aside from the fact that the IIe's motherboard could use a
cleaning, does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this
to happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
