Many IIgs's had battery failures as early just over a year old.  My, originally
ROM 0, IIgs is over eight years old and still on the original battery.  Nite
Owl makes a battery replacement kit for the GS.  I think it is still available
at Quality Computers.

I have a control panel to monitor my BRAM parameters to tell me if there is
bettery failure.
