HAVE to? no..but if you want to use all of the drive, you'll need to
format at least some of it as HFS. I forget how many prodos volumes you
can have under the latest ProDOS, but it's certainly not enough to deal
with a 500MB drive.
I'd format as much as possible as ProDOS, though, and only then fill up
the rest as HFS - thre are no GS utilities I know of that understand HFS -
so corrupt files on the HFS partition are dead dead dead
