Help viewing jpeg, gif

   I use an 8 bit (apple 2c).  I have a GIF viewer but I don't know what 
program to use to convert the encoded GIF pictures from USENET into a 
form I can decode.  Also, what program do I use to decode and to view (in 
DHIRES, preferably) the jpeg USENET pictures.
   I have trouble downloading Shrinkit programs (at least from Caltech: 
NASA seems to work OK) so I would prefer a site that offers them in 
BINSCII format.  However, if SHK files are my only choice, I can probably 
get them with the help of a friend's MAC.
   Any help would be appreciated. To summarize:
