I think most Commodore monitors used digital RGB (something like CGA)
instead of analog RGB which the IIgs supplies -- making them
incompatible.
The Apple Extended 80 Column RGB card (for the IIe) generates digital
RGB. I then have a Video7 Mappler (though I think the circuit is not
that complicated) that converts from the 15-pin connector from the
card to a 9-pin connector that can directly be hooked up to a
Commodore monitor.
