Re: Why Apple II?
Interesting comments Dan. I was thinking about this the other day watching my
kids use the computers at school, our local museums, public library, and when
we visit computer stores. Having only used Apple IIs at home they've learned
the basics of using any computer. They have learned their way around a QWERTY
keyboard, how to use a mouse, and the basics of interacting with what they
see on a screen. The small differences between machines, particularly in
mice, they figure out within a few minutes. So with respect to computer
literacy there just isn't a big difference between the older hardware we have
at home and the spiffy new stuff. On the bonus side we have a plentiful
supply of even older IIs that are GREAT for science fair projects! heh, heh,
we've brought IIs to a couple of science fairs. So far we've been one of the
few that have, but I do recall one occassion where someone had their parent's
shiny new PC with dad hovering over it glaring at any kid that even thought
about touching it. Meanwhile our II+ was in the trenches between the ever
present vinegar & baking soda volcanoes. That year the project was why we get
cold when we get out of the bath tub... very high-brow stuff :)
Have fun!
