TWGS not friendly with Appletalk???
Well in my quest for a stable IIGS with 4 meg of ram and all my goodies...
I came upon this little fact I would like to have verified if it is indeed
true.
I have been for some time using anywhere from 1 to 5 GS's at a time on my
network at home.. It's not quite ether to the GS but it works...
LocalTalk Bridge running on the mac server does a VERY GOOD job at letting
my GS's see and interact with my ether net macs!!1
Anyways. I finally ran a bunch of burn in tests and software tests in a
stint to narrow down exactly why my GS's were just sooooo flakey in
certain circumstances....
First test proved.... With a stock GS booting from my IIx server with
NO Harddrives, No floppies just a Cvtech 4meg card in the slot....
Appletalk would become flakey in about 45mins.... I have suspected this
card for a while but after 5 reboots after lockups, I was convinced there
might be something to the card that doesn't like Appletalk either or bad
ram... so I yanked it....
Next trick is to try the old RamPak 4gs in the machine.. NO DMA ability but
heck I am not using it yet either. Soo... Boot up and with that card
EVERYTHING seems to be working fine.. GNO is stable for now 4 days and
no crashes on init 5 with this card in place..
Okay.. Since the ram seems stable now and working wonderfully... Let's add
the Transwarp GS back into the system... It is the High Speed Gal Setted
with a 10mhz processor in it.. That I am only clocking at 8mhz.. I wanted
a good test measure and no sense overdriving the cpu yet..(It worked before
up to 13.75) Well, this time when I boot... Wham.. 45 mins of just
sitting at the desktop and crasherroooo.. I do this about 5 more times
and same results... Gno dies the same way with the TWGS 32k in it as well
and init 5 becomes REALLY flakey like locking up right before the desktop
fully comes back or crashing into the monitor at random points it seems
on exit... Oh well.. Remove the TWGS and test with another from a friend
who DOES NOT use Appletalk a lot.... Same thing.....
I am beginning to think I should break down and by the darn ZIP GS :)_
I took the TWGS out of the GS and reboot and now going on day 2 of uptimes
on the stock machine with the Rampak4GS card in it only...
Also note that I am using a custom Powersupply from an AT machine.. 250Watts
should be enough eh??? :) so that isn't the problem at least either..
I also have the FutureSound Stereo board installed again and all is going
well.
Next card back in line will be the SecondSight...But who knows.....It has
some crashing problems of it's own as I have experienced in testing before..
Any hints guys and gals????
Thanks for your help and with any luck I can get my development station
(at least one of them) stable enough to trust to test code out on...
