The female connector is numbered as follows, looking at the back of
the computer:
5 4 3 2 1
9 8 7 6
The pins are as follows:
1 PB1 Switch input 1, used for second button on first joystick
2 +5V
3 GND
4 PDL2 Paddle (analog) input 2, may be used for second joystick X
5 PDL0 Paddle (analog) input 0, used for first joystick X
6 PB2 Switch input 2, may be used for button on second joystick
7 PB0 Switch input 0, used for first button on first joystick
8 PDL1 Paddle (analog) input 1, used for first joystick Y
9 PDL3 Paddle (analog) input 3, may be used for second joystick Y
Note that the PB0 and PB1 soft-switches are also activated by the
Apple (Open Apple) and Option (Solid Apple) keys on the IIe keyboard.
The IIe has an option on the motherboard for connecting the Shift key
to the PB2 input, allowing it to be sensed by software.
The IIgs has an identical connector, but doesn't support the shift-key
mod (it has its own method for sensing all of the modifier keys). The
Apple and Option keys still go to the same softswitches as PB0 and
PB1, for compatibility with old software.
The IIc's game connector is very similar, but also supports a mouse.
PDL2, PDL3 and PB2 are not supported by the IIc. These pins are used
for some of the mouse connections, and other pins are redefined when a
mouse is connected.
The switch inputs are activated by connecting the input to +5V. A 560-ohm
pull down resistor should be used.
The paddle inputs are intended to be connected to a 150K
potentiometer (between the input and +5V), to produce a range from 0 to
255 when read via the routine provided in ROM. The return value is
proportional to the resistance.
