For larger projects, you probably need a I/O card, such as those from
ex-Applied Engineering. Maybe you can acquire one in the marketplace group?
There have been two such cards, a low-cost version and a top-notch version. (I
think they have 16 or 32 channels, respectively.)
Oh, I guess you're too old for that, but Lego is (was?) selling a kit for
building lego robots. I haven't seen it in action, but maybe it includes an
interface you could use for your project.
