Zip Chip failure?

How does a Zip Chip die? Lately Appleworks has been crashing on me when I 
go to arrange a DB by alpha it will hang. No problems w/ ProTerm or other 
apps. But things seemed slower on the AW crash & I ran the little 
diagnostics disk & it said failed. At other times it passed. This all on 
a IIc, BTW.

So how & why does a zip chip die?
