I have used a Mac for almost 10 years now. I have found NOTHING I can't do
on it that I CAN do on a DOS/Windows based PC. I run REAL real
applications such as intense number crunching in simulations of reaction
diffusion mechanisms underlying pattern formation in biochemical systems.
I also do solutions of population models using spreadsheets and other
numerical software. I have programmed in several environments including
BASIC. Pascal, C/C++, Mathematica, Hypercard inter alia. I have produced
commercial and non-commercial educartional projects, given multimedia
presentations at local, regional, national, and international conferences.
I also use the machine in the classroom and the lab. I have published
several lab manuals all created on a low end word processor on the mac. I
have also gotten MANY other faculty members at my college to use computers
in and out of the classroom on a daily basis all because they find they
CAN use the Mac easily and productively. Now I don't know how much more
REAL-WORLD you want to get!
I have despite the above just purchased a multimedia PC and have
RATIONALLY decided to install Win 95 on it. Why? Because my machine now
runs faster, has better memory management and is easier to use generally.
Not because it is more like a Mac (that's BS as any Mac-literate user
would tell you) but simply because it is a superior operating system than
Win 3.11 OR Os/2 (yes I have extensively used it as well).
You know, if we just stopped slamming other people's choices and spent
more time on the good points of our own choices, these discussions might
be more profitable. Too much of what I'm reading here sounds like puerile
schoolyard "Mine's Bigger Than Yours" whinings.
If you don't like an OS - don't use it!!!! But for goodness sake, don't
slam other people for their likes and dislikes!
Peace.
