Has anyone else had trouble getting decent bass output on a Sonic Blaster?

The two weels are supposed to be (per Ian) separate volume controls for
the right and left channels, but on my card, they act more like treble
and bass controls.  When I turn the bass up to about half of what I
would get out of the headphone jack, it distorts terribly.  Thanks!
