As on who has been in the magazine business for 20 years, writing and
phototgraphing for everything from SEVENTEEN to THE SMITHSONIAN, with
most of my work in photography where I was West Coast Editor of POPULAR
PHOTOGRAPHY for four years, and I did do one piece for Nibble, let me say
that the basic economic for such a magazine is not to be found here, nor
is there an atitude that will attract magazine type writers, who are
essentially commercial animals. Witness the flack I have gotten, and
still get, when I post a "free catalog" notice.
Most hobby magazine articles have the purpose of popularizing some new
product or expanding the entire enterprise in some way. Like the travel
pieces we would do for photo magazines getting the readers properly
outfitted for their trips, hopefully buying a lot of film, etc. In this
shrinking market there is little impetus for that kind of thing, but
there are some possibilities.
Magazine style articles, which could be reposted periodically, on how
to keep your Apple IIs running, sources of replacement software, services
and the like should be welcome here. This board, or whatever it is
called, could be converted into that kind of "magazine" with the proper
postings. If you wish I will put up a few such pieces, but I want no
flack, accusations of "commercializing the net" and so on.
Please pile on with your ideas and comments. Adrian Vance
