If you don't like Microsoft products, don't buy them. _That_ is the
only definition of "Fair" based on rationality. Nobody is putting a gun
to your head to force you to buy Microsoft products. Microsoft happens
to have put out the products that people want, and contrary to
many people's beliefs, __people do not keep buying products that do
not give them some benefit__.
Microsoft is a huge corporation because Bill Gates knows how to
create and distribute mass-market computer software. There is no force,
no fraud involved.
If you want to compete with Microsoft - DO IT! Nobody's stopping you.
There are many alternatives to Microsoft products (more than I can count),
and a lot of people go with the alternatives. IBM's OS/2 is highly
regarded by its users; Macintosh is of course a common system; WordPerfect
has a producitivity bundle called PerfectOffice. If you don't like
Microsoft's products, then fine, but don't whine about Microsoft
being "unfair", that meaningless catch-phrase of the "anti-trust"
crowd who seek only to destroy businessmen because they're
good at what they do.
I just purchased Windows '95 for my PC and it's a great piece of work.
I often use Microsoft Word and it's a good piece of software as well.
I did the GNO and Splat! manuals in it, a total of several hundred
pages, so I know what I'm talking about. It's not perfect, but what
software over a coupl hundred lines _is_? The only thing you can
do is report the problems so they can fix it.
I'm also very pleased with Microsoft Visual C++; the environment
is very easy to use, and very well designed.

Fine! I still have a IIGS sitting here, and I use it frequently
(this is my home machine; obviously I use the IIGS at Sequential
a lot to develop software :-)

Nobody says that, so stop screaming about "fairness". If you want to do
the things you've outlined above, just do it.
