Upon power-up, you should get one of the following displays:

                Apple ][
]
(if the machine is NOT enhanced, or if it is enhanced...)
                Apple //e
]

Either way, note that you should get dumped into Applesoft, and you should
hear a <BEEP> (unless the speaker is disconnected).  Before running off
and buying any interface cards, make sure you can get that far.  If you
can't get that far, start by re-seating all of the socketed IC's on the
motherboard.  You might also check for bad RAM IC's, though I'm not sure
how you would go about it.
