I don't know why you're having such a bad time.  And since I use a
ProDOS-8 terminal problem, it shouldn't matter whether you're on a 
IIgs (as I am) or not.

One thing you DO have to do, though, is make sure the terminal 
programs you're using KNOWS it is supposed to be talking to 
a null modem cable.  I now you can tell ProTerm 3.0 and above.  
Don't know about any of the others.  Obviously, both computers 
must be using the same ASYNC settings (8bit, No Parity, 1 Stop
bit is common) and baud rate.

If the terminal program doesn't know it is a null modem it is 
using, it will be expecting certain signals from certain pins 
on the cable in a certain order... which won't be happening 
since there isn't a real modem there.
