What Am I Looking At?

I have a friend who was given what I think is an Apple.  It has 2
Apple II disk drives (5.25"), the system unit and keyboard are dark
plexiglass with components mounted inside.  I'm guessing that it is
some antiquity that was sold as a kit and put together at home.  

My problem is rather severe in that I don't seem to have any operating
system for this machine and I don't know what I have so I don't know
what to look for.  Easy Huh?  

Well if any of you guys can help a poor Windows guy out (sort of a
cross culture exchange) I sure would appreciate it.
