2 q's : Dead Vulcan & gs <--> mac interconnection

Hi all.... sorry about the previous post.... getting used to tin for
windows.... ugh!

Ok.... the questions, if someone would be so kind to answer any of them :

1. A friend of mine called me the other day saying that his 40 meg Vulcan hd
had died. I asked him for symptoms... He said :
      a. Turn on the gs. The Vulcan light goes on for a little while, then
turns off.
      b. The gs can't read slot 7, ctrl panel setting is on scan, so it
attempts to read slot 5 next, which contains the Vulcan utility disk.
      c. The Vulcan utility disk loads for a while, then stops. After a few
minutes, the Vulcan light turns on again, fires up, then dies.
      d. The Vulcan utility disk continues loading, but does not recognise
the hd. (As can be expected!!! - I'd be worried if it did!!)
It sounds like "stiction" (i.e. hd grease is sticking and slowing the hd down
to a unreadable speed) to me, but i'm not sure. The question is : If it is a
problem with the actual physical hd rather than the controller, where can one
obtain a new hd to replace the broken one? Obviously, I would need to know
the type of hd (Quantum 40??). Also, can you attach any size hd to the
controller, or can the controller only address 40 meg?

Secoond question :

2. He also wants to hook his gs up to his Macintosh LC, so that his gs can
access the Mac's hd. How is this possible?? (Please don't say a null modem
link !!! :) ) He basically wants some kind of Client <--> server
relationship, I'd expect. Can the GS, mac and hd be joined in a scsi chain?
I'm quite sure this had been debated here on csa2 before.... sorry if it's a
faq!

Thanking you all in anticipation!!! :)
