It's me again: need some help!

Hi!

Well, I'm back again. Before I ask my questions, a post called
Levity (fwd) by "ALL YOU CAN" was accidently sent by me, and not by the
person listed. Apologies for that, I think I accidently sent to the
Utexas gateway (don't know how) and I was surprised to see it there.

My questions: As I have stated and will state again my current hardware
setup: a 128K soon to be enhanced IIe, using a Sequetial Systems
SuperComm serial card, connected to a Hyundai 2400 baud modem using a
older verision of Talk is Cheap (v.31) Now every other problem will seem
trival when compared to this, I load up TIC, plug the modem in, type AT
to check the modem, the modem apparently receives the command and is
supposed to return an "OK" on screen. Now the problem is many times I
don't receive that OK on screen. At first I thought it was the software,
but one day, I was fooling around and it finally worked. It turned out
the solution was, let the software load, and then plug the modem in, and
a small symbol like ` would appear and the modem returns would be
displayed. Unfortunately, it hasn't been that way lately, and it's
getting a bit frustrating. The Modem manual (lacking an index, full of
typos, and not explaning everything) suggests checking the cables, etc.
and try again. Well, I've done just about everything sometimes and it
still doesn't work, and sometimes, I just have to wait until a lucky
moment when it finally does work! Anyone have a solution? It appears
the software is working, the card is functioning, the cable is fine, and
the modem seems to be working (I'll have to check on that when I get
home) and without another software at the moment, or even someone else's
computer, it's hard to check what might be wrong. I hope someone has
some ideas, because it's not fun plugging and unpluggine my modem all the
time (it doesn't have an on/off switch) and checking to see if the
software has seen the modem. Thanks for any help!
