HyperC, Opix, and II+ ignore escape key (why?)

I have the following things:
a 16 year old II+ with lower case keyboard adapter
shift key mod wire to the game paddle port
a videx-like 80-column card
HyperC
opix.system 1.01
lots of hardware that I assume is unimportant here
Things work fine with one exception: my escape key is
ignored. The key works fine in all other applications.
If I write a C program to read the keyboard, escape works.
But, if I invoke the HyperC editor, I can't escape out of
certain modes. If I try to compile a file from the wrong
directory, I can't escape out of the error trap.
Does anyone have a similar setup where the escape key works?
Has anyone had to patch the system to make it work?
Any help is appreciated.
