To make things even more of a blast in the past, they had a system called
Notes (not Lotus Notes, but something homegrown named Notes) with a Usenet
gateway. I started out accessing the group through that, not knowing there
was a difference between it and Usenet proper. (That's not much different
than someone from [AOL|Google Groups|some random web forum] confusing that
other system with Usenet.) Since comp.binaries.apple2 (and its predecessor)
weren't carried on Notes and I wanted to download the software other people
were talking about here, someone ended up pointing me toward rn and other
newsreading tools.
I still use trn (the threaded successor to rn) for reading news. It hasn't
been updated in something like 8-10 years, but it gets the job done and I'm
familiar with it.
