they are indeed ram cards - and the Octoram, as you surmise, is an 8MB
board. The others are 4mb.  I use the GSSauce with no complaints - it's
fully DMA compatible and never given me a lick of trouble in all the years
I've owned it.

just FYI - Sequential Systems now sells a couple ram cards (I don't have
the names exactly, but it's something like GS-Ram and GS-RAMplus) that
come in 4 and 8 MB configurations
